Prague Planetarium

Sample presentation from the planetarium – video

I haven’t seen anything so technically unique and astonishing in a very long time. After the recent reconstruction of the Planetarium – which I’ll mention in more detail later – its visual and scenic capabilities have reached a world-class level, unmatched in Europe.

The Prague Planetarium is an educational and cultural institution dedicated to popularising astronomy, the natural sciences, and technology. It is located in the Royal Game Reserve (Stromovka Park) in Prague’s 7th district. The building was designed by the architect Jaroslav Fragner and opened to the public on 20 November 1960.

Between 2023 and 2025, the Planetarium underwent a major reconstruction. It was equipped with the most advanced LED projection dome in the world, measuring 22 metres in diameter, along with a new digital system that combines Digistar 7 and Unreal Engine technologies. As a result, the Prague Planetarium is now among the most technologically advanced facilities of its kind – not only in Europe but also globally.

The reconstruction involved both technical and structural improvements to the entire building. The new dome is composed of more than 45 million micro-LEDs, making it the first installation of its kind in Europe. The technology was supplied by the American company Cosm. Unlike traditional systems using multiple projectors, the LED dome features an active emissive surface – meaning that the image is not projected onto the dome but emitted directly from it.

This allows for extremely high brightness, deeper contrast, a wider colour range, and unprecedented image smoothness with no visible seams or distortions. The resolution exceeds standard 8K, providing full-quality visualisation for both scientific simulations and cinematic projections. But more than words can describe – it’s something that truly needs to be seen with your own eyes. And it’s absolutely worth it!
