Brand near Bludenz, Lake Constance and Lüner Lake – Vorarlberg – Austria

3.9. – 5.9.2021 Austria Abroad

Although we spent these nine days in a relatively small area, we visited so many different and amazing places that, as a result, each of them deserves its own article. The area of westernmost Austria, which borders, among other things, Liechtenstein, was probably one of the most beautiful places in Austria that we have ever visited in Austria. In addition to the enchanting area around Serfaus, Fiss and Ladis it was the aforementioned Liechtenstein; the breathtaking Lüner Lake; the marvelous Kaunertal valley between the Gepatsch-Stausee dam and the Kaunertaler Gletscher with views at the top of Karlesjoch and finally the town of Sankt Anton am Arlberg.

Lake Constance (German Bodensee, French Lac de Constance, Italian Lago di Costanza or Lago Bodanico, English Lake Constance) is the second largest lake in the Alps. The lake has an area of 536 square kilometer. It is 63.3 km long and a maximum of 14 km wide. It reaches a maximum depth of 254 m. It lies at an altitude of 395.6 m above sea level. The lake lies in three countries – Germany (Bavaria, Baden-Württemberg), Austria (Vorarlberg) and Switzerland (Sankt Gallen, Thurgau, Schaffhausen). It is the largest lake in Austria and Germany and the second largest in Switzerland. It is also the third largest in Central Europe after Lake Balaton and Lake Geneva. Interestingly, no official boundaries are defined at the lake surface.

The Lüner Lake is the largest and highest lake in the Austrian state of Vorarlberg, located at the end of the Brandnertal valley. It lies at an altitude of 1,970 m above sea level. The lake is partly artificially built on the site of the original lake. It is up to 2 km long at its farthest points and 1.2 km wide. It reaches a depth of 139 m and is often used by fishermen. With such large dimensions, it is the largest natural lake in all of Austria. Today it serves as a water reservoir for three hydroelectric power plants in the valley. It has rightly become a popular destination for tourists; the lake is lined with beautiful mountains and together with the surrounding unspoiled nature create an absolutely magical place. In addition, the Lüner Lake is the starting point for numerous hikes; in the vicinity there are a number of climbing peaks, several alpine trails and via ferrata. The border with Switzerland runs on the ridge of the opposite part of the Lüner Lake dam. This place can therefore be chosen as a starting point for the crossing of the Alps to Swiss territory.
