Ski and hiking resort Zell am See-Kaprun – Austria

17.4. – 21.4.2025 Austria Abroad

I know we were here relatively recently. This time, however, it was with the "extended" family, so we didn't have time to visit all the surrounding peaks, as we did last time. This was also due to the fact that the cable car to Maiskogel was no longer running and also because the weather was not exactly ideal one day. But we still visited two of the most interesting places here. It was the Top of Salzburg viewing platform located at an altitude of 3029 meters above sea level on the top of the Kitzsteinhorn mountain and the beautiful local Lake Zell. You can get to the Top of Salzburg viewing platform using 3 to 4 cable cars (there are more options for getting here) and in addition to the platform itself, where you will have unique views of the highest mountains in Austria and the surrounding landscape, there is also a very nicely done museum and restaurant. On the other hand, Lake Zell is located "only" at an altitude of 750 meters above sea level. It is a freshwater lake that is 8 km long and 1.5 km wide; at its deepest point it reaches a depth of 68 metres. In winter the lake freezes over completely and is used for winter sports, in summer it is used for recreational boating. Since, apart from the ferries that run between the towns of Zell am See and Thumersbach, no internal combustion engines are allowed, so-called "electric boats" are rented instead. The water in the lake is therefore very clean and suitable for swimming and diving. However, it is somewhat colder. As a result, I consider this entire area, thanks to the information given above and not only because of it, to be one of the most beautiful in Austria and that I have seen so far.
