Norway – from Trondheim to Bodø and back

24.12.2016 – 1.1.2017 Norway Abroad

This Christmas and New Year, we spent a little differently, actually quite differently than it has ever been in the past. We had again many experiences and the whole trip was about something completely different and new. Originally, we wanted to go to Lofoten Islands, but due to the bad weather, the original plan failed. The ferry didn´t ride from Bodø to Moskenes (Lofoten Islands). The weather was incredible and throughout our journey little bit wild. During the trip we have experienced how the temperature of -18 °C are, as well as large amounts of snow and rain, but also the blue sky. The Gulf Stream affects the weather around the coast of Norway. In addition, in this period is a large part of Norway – especially its part above the Arctic Circle – in the so-called period of the polar night. Polar night is a phenomenon where for at least one day the sun not ascent above the horizon and therefore there is missing natural sunlight. The number of days after which the polar night occurs depends on the latitude. The observer is further from the Arctic Circle (closer to the pole); it is a longer polar night. This unusual phenomenon for us to give this landscape a special and undeniable demonic. The most interesting cities, which we drove through and in which we spent at least one night, were Trondheim, Mo i Rana and Bodø. We also saw a few interesting animal species. Several times, we saw a moose and we rode around a group of reindeers. Our own New Year’s Eve we spent in Trondheim, and we welcomed here New Year 2017.

Trondheim (Nidaros previously) is the administrative town of the County Sør-Trøndelag in Norway and the Centre of the Trondheim region. With its approximately 170 000 inhabitants, is the third largest city of Norway, in Trondheim. The city lies in the 130 km long fjord, which bears his name called Trondheimsfjorden. In the city flows into the sea river Nidelva. The most interesting sights of the city are for exemple Archiepiscopate of Nidaros, Archbishop's Palace or Kristiansten Fortress.

Mo i Rana is a Norwegian town located in Nordland, 80 km south of the Arctic Circle. It has approximately 18 thousand inhabitants. Starts here European route E12.

Bodø is the capital of the region Nordland. Bodø has approximately 50,000 inhabitants and an area of 1392 sq km. There is for example Norwegian Aviation Museum.
