Croatian island Krk and Plitvice Lakes National Park – Croatia

30.8. – 5.9.2020 Croatia Abroad

Until a few months ago, I would not have believed that we could be on holiday in the same country again in such a short time. One thinks, but the current situation with a pandemic, which has affected basically the whole world, changes one's plans. And in fact, it wasn't bad at all in the end. We chose a different destination compared to the last visit and got to know something new and different. The most interesting places we visited this time included the island of Krk and Plitvice Lakes National Park.

Krk is a Croatian island in the northern Adriatic Sea, located near Rijeka in the Bay of Kvarner and part of Primorje-Gorski Kotar County. Krk is the largest Adriatic island, with an area of 405.80 km² (156.68 sq mi). Krk is the most populous island in the Adriatic Sea, with multiple towns and villages.

Plitvice Lakes National Park (Croatian: Nacionalni park Plitvička jezera, colloquially Plitvice) is one of the oldest and largest national parks in Croatia. In 1979, Plitvice Lakes National Park was added to the UNESCO World Heritage register. The national park was founded in 1949 and is in the mountainous karst area of central Croatia, at the border to Bosnia and Herzegovina. The protected area extends over 296.85 km² (73,350 acres). About 90% of this area is part of Lika-Senj County, while the remaining 10% is part of Karlovac County. The Plitvice Lakes have formed in a depression between the Mala Kapela Mountain in the west and the Plješevica Mountain in the east amidst the Dinaric Alps. The overall water body area is about 2 km² (0.77 sq mi). The two largest lakes, Prošćansko jezero and Kozjak, cover about 80 percent of the overall water body area. These lakes are also the deepest. The altitude drop from the first lake to the last is 133 meters (436 feet). The 16 lakes that can be seen from the surface are grouped into the 12 Upper Lakes (Gornja jezera) and the four Lower Lakes (Donja jezera). The highest waterfalls are the Large Waterfall (Croatian: Veliki Slap) at the end of the Lower Lakes, over which the Plitvica river falls, and Galovački Buk at the Upper Lakes. Thanks to all the above information, Plitvice Lakes is one of the most beautiful places in Croatia.
