24.9. – 28.9.2021 Austria Abroad

The area around Schladming is very interesting. There are several remarkable places nearby – especially the beautiful Dachstein Mountains with its highest peak Hoher Dachstein, the 5 Fingers viewpoint on the Mount Krippenstein, the Planai peak above Schladming and the very attractive Lake Hallstatt. And of course many more.

Schladming is located on the northern slopes of the Schladminger Tauern in Styria. The most famous local peak is Planai (1906 m above sea level). Planai is also the name of a part of the ski resort; in 2013, the world alpine skiing championship was even held here.

The Dachstein Mountains have an area of about 900 km². It lies on the border of Upper Austria, Styria and Salzburg. Its highest peak, the Hoher Dachstein (2995 m above sea level), is the second highest mountain in the Northern Limestone Alps. It is also the highest mountain in Styria and Upper Austria. There are two cable cars in the Dachstein massif. These are the Dachsteinseilbahn from Obertraun and the Dachsteinsüdwandbahn. The Via Alpina long-distance alpine road also passes through the massif. There is a system of glacier caves consisting of Dachstein-Rieseneishöhle (Giant Ice Cave), Dachstein-Mammuthöhle (Mammoth Cave), Hirlatzhöhle and Koppenbrüllerhöhle. And also the Sky Walk, the highest suspension bridge in Austria (100 meters long) and the glazed Treppe ins Nichts (translated as "Stairs to space").

The 5 Fingers is one of the most sought-after and beautiful views in Austria. It offers breathtaking views of Lake Hallstatt. The viewpoint is about a 30-minute leisurely walk from the cable car station, during which you can enjoy wonderful views of the surrounding enchanting panoramas of the Alps.
