Vancouver, Whistler, Kamloops – British Columbia – Canada

17.8. – 1.9.2024 Canada British Columbia Abroad

It was our first trip to Canada. And I dare say she wasn't the last. We were so impressed by this country that on the way back we were already planning where to look next. But more on that in a moment. During our trip we visited three interesting cities in British Columbia. They were Vancouver, Whistler and Kamloops.

Vancouver is a huge city that, thanks to its location and not only, is an ideal city to live in. The location by the sea, beautiful and interesting natural parks, huge skyscrapers, the possibility to observe or use ocean-going ships and seaplanes for transport, excellent food and pleasant people compared to the USA – all this, but also other little things, make Vancouver a very pleasant metropolis Actually, the only negative experience for us was an "accidental" visit (during a trip to Chinatown) to a part of Downtown where the so-called "zombie drug" is widespread, also known as "tranq" (xylazine mixed with fentanyl and eg heroin).

The next town visited was Whistler. A beautiful place surrounded by amazing forests, breath-taking lakes and Whistler Mountain (which is part of the Cordillera) towering above. If I were to compare this city to, for example, the Czech Republic, it is like our Špindlerův Mlýn. It even hosted the Winter Olympics in 2010, so it's home to a huge number of luxury hotels and accommodation, among other things. In passing, Canada is truly a tremendous country. 500 km from one city to another is not "any" distance here. So, while the distance between individual cities looks relatively short on the map at first glance, in reality one spends several hours in the car to get from one larger city to another.

The last city visited was Kamloops. We Europeans mostly know Canada from photos as a land of magical lakes, forests and mountains, but this place took our breath away in a way. There is hardly anything like breath-taking mountains and forests here. On the way here from Whistler, after about 2 hours, the aforementioned forests suddenly end and the landscape almost turns into a semi-desert; here they call it prairie. But of course, that does not mean that it was worse or uglier here, it was simply different from what one would expect from the Canadian landscape, or what would he know from photos from Canada.

And as I wrote at the beginning – this country enchanted us so much that we are already seriously thinking about visiting, for example, Calgary next year (and the famous Jasper and Banff parks in its vicinity), or the east of the country, e.g. Québec … well, we'll see. We are already looking forward to it!
