Vaduz – Liechtenstein

4.9.2021 Liechtenstein Abroad

Although we spent these nine days in a relatively small area, we visited so many different and amazing places that, as a result, each of them deserves its own article. The area of westernmost Austria, which borders, among other things, Liechtenstein, was probably one of the most beautiful places in Austria that we have ever visited in Austria. In addition to the enchanting area around Serfaus, Fiss and Ladis it was the aforementioned Liechtenstein; the breathtaking Lüner Lake; the marvelous Kaunertal valley between the Gepatsch-Stausee dam and the Kaunertaler Gletscher with views at the top of Karlesjoch and finally the town of Sankt Anton am Arlberg.

Vaduz (local German pronunciation [faduc] / [fadúc]) is the capital of Liechtenstein. It lies on the right bank of the Rhine at an altitude of 455 m; has an area of 17.3 square kilometer and has 5696 inhabitants. The city is undoubtedly one of the smallest capitals in Europe and the world. However, this does not mean that there is nothing to see in Vaduz. Exactly opposite; has its cathedral, state assembly and probably the most famous symbol of the city Vaduz Castle (formerly a medieval castle), which is built on a rock above the city.
The appearance of the city is not very different from other historic cities, which are located in the valleys of the Austrian and Swiss Alps. All have similarly narrow streets and picturesque squares or houses made of white stone. All the life of the city is concentrated in the pedestrian zone of the main street, which encircles the rock with the castle in a semicircle. In addition to the above-mentioned cathedral, there is also the town hall, office buildings, banks and several museums and shops. In addition to the Prince's Castle and Chateau, the most famous local monuments and attractions include Cathedral of St. Florin, the Parliament Building in the city center, the Städtle pedestrian zone, the Liechtenstein Provincial Museum, the Kunstmuseum and the Postmuseum.
