Nové Hrady is a town in the Novohradské hory near the border with Austria, located about 30 km southeast of České Budějovice. The historic core is a city monument zone. Nové Hrady was an important border fortress in the Middle Ages. It is documented in the sources that they first served as a Slavic stronghold, then in the 13th century a highly medieval castle belonging to the Vítkov family was built here. After 1620, Nové Hrady became the residential town of the Buquoys, who lived here until 1945, first in a rebuilt Rožmberk house on the square, converted into a Baroque residence, and later in a newly built early classicist chateau on the edge of the historic city center.
The attractions of the city and the surrounding area include, for example, Tereziino údolí (also Terčino údolí), NPR Červené blato, NPP Hojná voda, Horní Stropnice, Cuknštejn fortress, Nové Hrady castle, St. Peter and Paul's church (Nové Hrady) and the Monastery of the Divine Mercy of the Family of the Virgin Mary – the Servite monastery. Servite monastery near the church of St. Peter and Paul, was founded in 1677 by the owner of the estate, Count F. Buquoy, as a thank you to the Virgin Mary for her recovery from a severe injury in the battle with the Turks. After 1990, it was restored mainly thanks to donations from Austria. The Nové Hrady castle also belongs to another important monument. Some of the aforementioned monuments can be seen in the photos taken.
