Winter Vltava between Lipno nad Vltavou and Loučovice

26.12.2021 Czechia Amazing place of Czechia

The Vltava River is beautiful not only in summer but also in winter. And the section just below the Lipno Dam is unique in a way. The Vltava is slowly starting to meander under the dam and under the village of Loučovice it is slowly turning into an amazing, but at the same time very dangerous boulder riverbed with many meanders and incredible nooks. The whole area between Loučovice and Vyšší Brod is known as the Devil's Streams, respectively as the national nature reserve Čertova stěna-Luč.

Only a few times a year, more water flows through the Devil's Streams. This happens on the occasion of the discharge of the Lipno Dam, or when organizing boating competitions. The rapids that have WW IV–V difficulty in many places are really an experience to drive, but even watching the races themselves is an amazing experience. The devil's currents are normally considered impassable, but since the construction of the Lipno Dam, various water slalom races have been held here or the river is just coming down; however, this requires an increased flow provided by the Lipno Dam (usually 20–30 m³/s, the usual flow is 2 m³/s) and, above all, a lot of experience. The entire Vltava route from the Lipno Dam to Vyšší Brod is used. The section of the Devil's Streams in the Čertova Stěna-Luč area is considered to be one of the most difficult natural slalom or boating trails in the world. In 2004, the World Rafting Championships even took place here.

No one would say that this is such a wild river at a time when it is calm and there is snow everywhere.
