Wild water below Lipno

28.8.2011 Czechia Sport

Just like every year – this year too – they took place on 27.8. and 28.8. wild water races under the South Bohemian Lipno dam. And just like in previous years, "anyone" could try this "wild" water, the difficulty of which is one of the most difficult in the Czech Republic, for themselves. How this water looks from the shore, you can see in the photos depicting real professionals of this amazing sport.
Some sections of the rapids on the Vltava between Lipno I and II are classified as WW IV, i.e. as very difficult rapids, with a lot of waves with ridges (so-called wrappers), with rollers, eddies and large cauliflowers. In such sections, self-rescue is then difficult, so the route should be known in advance. Such water is therefore suitable for physically fit, experienced and well-coordinated crews. It goes without saying that life vests for heavy terrain, helmets and throwing bags are used.
In addition, in the Czech Republic there is still a difficulty marked as WW V and WW VI. (WW is an abbreviation of the German Wildwasser, i.e. "wild water"). On WW V difficulty, there are extremely difficult rapids, packers, heavy rollers, undercurrents and jumps with limited self-rescue options; a tour and detailed knowledge of the track crossing is required. Waters marked WW VI are waters at the limit of navigability with the heaviest possible obstacles. Such a place is, for example, the waterfalls on the Mumlava.
