Plešné Lake, Plechý

18.3.2010 Czechia Amazing place of Czechia

Although spring is already in full swing and there is no snow in the lowlands, there are still places where there is still plenty of snow thanks to the long winter. It's not just the ski centers that look like they'll be open for the next few weeks, and where they're finally having a successful season again, but they're also places where the visitor numbers are just the opposite. One such place is Plešné Lake and its peak Plechý. This place is heavily visited in the warm months, but now you hardly meet a living soul there, and if you want to get to the top or even to the lake itself, you have to trudge your way through deep snow. Thanks to the constant amount of snow and low temperatures throughout this long winter, there is still plenty of snow in many places, especially at higher altitudes. The snow is already wet and heavy thanks to the higher daily temperatures, but its height still reaches high values. Values around 130-140 cm are not an exception in many places. A big disappointment for me, but also for my friends, was the way in which the overall nature of the landscape around the lake and the top itself has changed in a few years. Just a few years ago, Plechý was a densely wooded hill with lush vegetation, today it is just the opposite. And in winter it is even more visible. The bark beetle, several extremely strong winds, but also the way of farming in Šumava National Park certainly had and still has a big influence on this. If things continue at this rate, Plechý and its surroundings will be completely devoid of trees and will become a bare unsightly hill that will completely lose the wonderful atmosphere it once had.
