Nature Preserve Radouč – Ground squirrel paradise near Mladá Boleslav

13.4.2020 Czechia Fauna and Flora Amazing place of Czechia

The Nature Preserve Radouč is a small protected area located in the Mladá Boleslav district at an altitude of 225–240 meters. The subject of protection is the occurrence of herbaceous and rocky thermophilic communities on the slopes formed by calcareous sandstones, especially the protection of the fallow deer (Fumana procumbens), whose natural occurrence is unique in the whole territory of the Czech Republic. For many people, however, this location will be interesting because there is a European protected ground squirrel, which has its colony here. Along with him, a wild rabbit also spread here.

For the maintenance and eventual growth of the ground squirrel colony, it is important to regularly mow the grass and guard dog dogs around the ground squirrels. Radouč is one of 35 localities where the ground squirrel occurs. The ground squirrel colony in 2006 was estimated at five individuals, in 2010 the colony already numbered 30–40 individuals, as grass was mown in 2007, which created favorable conditions for both the ground squirrel and wild rabbit life. If you want to see ground squirrels in the immediate vicinity, we recommend visiting this place and at the same time enjoying many fun situations in the company of these restless creatures.
