Zugspitze – Germany and Hintertux – Austria

17.11. – 20.11.2016 Germany Austria Abroad

Other interesting places that we visited recently, is one of Germany's highest mountain – the Zugspitze and Hintertux Glacier in Austria. Although the weather in the lower altitudes throughout the weekend was not much of anything above the clouds it was completely reversed and the Zugspitze is greeted us with spectacular views of the surrounding peaks. Was no exception to the Hintertux glacier, where the weather was substantially changed from day to day. Despite less than ideal weather, the ski resort's interested and always finds its slopes and visit the enormous amount of skiers.

The Zugspitze at 2,962 m (9,718 ft) above sea level, is the highest peak of the Wetterstein Mountains as well as the highest mountain in Germany. It lies south of the town of Garmisch-Partenkirchen, and the border between Germany and Austria runs over its western summit. South of the mountain is the Zugspitzplatt, a high karst plateau with numerous caves. On the flanks of the Zugspitze are three glaciers, including the two largest in Germany: the Northern Schneeferner with an area of 30.7 hectares and the Höllentalferner with an area of 24.7 hectares. The third is the Southern Schneeferner which covers 8.4 hectares.

The Hintertux (563 km from Prague) is an Austrian glacier with excellent snow conditions in the sea at 1 500-3 250m above sea level. It is the only Austrian ski resort, which is open 365 days a year. Hintertux has 86 km of downhill runs of all difficulty levels, terrain and deep snow and challenging slopes with moguls.
