Kokořínsko

29.6.2013 Czechia Amazing place of Czechia

Another interesting place to which the journey from Prague does not take too long is the Kokořín Castle and its surroundings, i.e. the Kokořínsko Protected Area. A large number of marked hiking trails and the beautiful nature around this castle make this area an ideal place for an all-day hiking trip or an easy bike ride. In addition to the castle, which is the dominant feature of this region, there are also many rock formations in the PLA, the shapes of which gave these stone monoliths their names. They are, for example, the Book, the Elephant, the Knight, the Frog and dozens of others similar to them. The most prominent of them is Poklička, which is a rock formation created by the selective weathering of variously resistant sandstones and iron conglomerates. Its shape resembles a column or a truncated cone with a lid. The trick consists of a hat with dimensions of 6 x 5 x 1.5 meters and a column that measures 10.5 m.
Kokořín Castle is located approximately ten kilometers northeast of Mělník above the Pšovka river in Dokeská pahorkatina, near the village of Kokořín. It was built after 1320, probably by Prague burgrave Hynek Berka from Dubá. After the name of the castle, the entire protected area is called Kokořínské. The Kokořín cylindrical observation tower is 38 meters high. During the reconstruction, the castle palace was raised by one floor and roofed. In 2001, it became a national cultural monument.
