Around the Kamenice river

29.10. – 1.11.2011 Czechia Amazing place of Czechia

The entire area spanning the territory of the České Švýcarsko National Park, the Lužické Mountains PLA and the Labské pískovce PLA is unique and magical in its own way. The Kamenice River flows through this entire area, which originates in the Lužické Mountains below Jedlová Mountain. The spring first flows into Hranicní rybník, and Kamenice as such already flows from it. In its upper reaches it has the character of a mountain stream. It flows from the slopes of the Lužické Mountains, flows through the village of Kytlice and flows in a deep valley under the ruins of the Pustý Castle. Then it calms down and flows in a wide valley through Česká Kamenica, around Rabštejn (there was a concentration camp here during the Second World War) and Srbská Kamenica. After the confluence with the Chřibská Kamenice, it flows into the České Švýcarsko National Park and flows through the Ferdinandova, Divoká and Tichá gorges. Here it flows between steep rocks that often fall down to the water. Both the Tichá and the Divoká gorges are for the most part accessible by hiking trails and boating; on the other hand, the upper part of the Tiché and the entire Ferdinandova gorge are located in the first zone of the national park, so entry is prohibited here. After a 35.6 km long journey, Kamenice in Hřensko flows into the Elbe from the right.
